Lea Vaisova: The past mobilizes very strong polemical discussions
The past really mobilizes very strong polemical discussions, battles, and in this sense we see how history is used in the present with different political stakes and how the past mobilizes much more than different projects for the future. I am not sure that the future is in the focus of public debates.

BREAKING OUT: ART IN SOFIA
A notable example of such involvement is Krassimir Terziev’s installation Between the Past Which Is About to Happen and the Future Which Has Already Been. Located at the site of the former mausoleum, this work was created as part of the municipality’s sole active programme for temporary public installations. Completed in 2024 after significant delays, the work was designed from the outset to encourage dialogue. It consists of letter-shaped benches arranged in an open circle, spelling out its title. This spatial composition confronts viewers with a paradoxical interplay of temporal layers, encouraging reflection on our position in the present. Steering clear of overt critique, activism or entertainment, Terziev instead offers a place to sit within the urban landscape — though not necessarily one of comfort. Perhaps this subtle balance is what has allowed it to resonate with the city’s inhabitants. A public programme featuring various conversational formats has been introduced…

Grammar of History in Images
[...] the new installation on the site of the demolished mausoleum rather offers us the intermediate state of a contingent present, sandwiched "Between the past that is about to happen and the future that has already been." The conceptual work of Krasimir Terziev aims to bring to life the historical public place, where the burden of an absence, of a once powerful presence that seems to have left no one unparticipated, still weighs. The enchanted circle of the composition pessimistically locks us in the past, in repeating the same thing, and the neon light has a flashy, warning character - a ghost still roams Bulgaria. But it seems that the time has come for an exorcism in the processes of rethinking the urban space, as we see in the long-delayed dismantling of the Monument to the Soviet Army.

The risks of reading
He should be the most famous artist in Bulgaria at the moment. But he is not. The most famous and discussed these days is his work on the site of the former mausoleum - "Between the past that is about to happen and the future that has already been". The installation officially opened at the end of April and will remain there for a year. The work of the visual artist won in 2022 the second edition of the "Outside" program of the Metropolitan Municipality. A few days ago, the joint exhibition "Egg from a cow, milk from a hen" by Zelko Terziev, Kalina Dimitrova and Krasimir Terziev was presented in the Art Gallery - Dobrich. The exhibition presents a selection of works created in the period 2000–2024.

[...] Here it is important to note that Krassimir Terziev works through the installation in this direction – it leaves the vertical axis characteristic of monumentality, and the letters are scaled so one is able to sit on them. In addition to the possibility of spontaneous use by passers-by, a discussion program is also being prepared, as well as an opportunity for artists to interpret the work in their own way.

One of the intentions implemented in the project is to work against this trend in our society of increasing masses of people who believe that the earth is flat. There are more and more people who accept everything as black and white, and this I think is very harmful in the increasingly complex and unstable modern world. That's why I wanted to make something in this symbolic place that is not immediately decoded, on first reading, that provokes further readings.

Either recycled images from the past or "outsourced" images from new technologies. This installation does not impose its originality, it does not manipulate, it does not become a PR of its creator. It is placed in its right place. If it were placed in any other place, the sentence would sound abstract and pretentious. But it is in this very place that it acquires historical, political, social and existential meaning.

A new modern art installation adorns the mausoleum site
The installation of the visual artist Krassimir Terziev "Between the past that is about to happen and the future that has already been" is already a fact in the City Garden in Sofia. The art installation is located on the site of the former mausoleum in the center of the capital. The crises we are going through reinforce the sense of the past. We are constantly replaying moments from the past and it is difficult for us to create visions for our future, Terziev, who is a doctor of cultural anthropology, told the Bulgarian National Radio.

Art in the public space requires courage – from everyone
For nearly two decades, the site of the former mausoleum in Sofia remained empty. And it stood as a white spot, symbolically marking the public failure to deal with the historical past, with the period of the communist regime. A white spot like a trauma in memory that cannot be understood or at least begun to heal. Sometimes ideas arose to place monuments on this site - of kings and khans, but they died. Perhaps because of the feeling that history cannot be "filled in" with even older history in the form of permanent monuments. They would only secondary mortify the place. A present with a future was needed, a perspective from which to make sense of this white patch of the past.

There will be a circle of luminous letters at the site of the mausoleum in Sofia
An inscription of luminous letters will replace the installation "One Man" on the site of the former mausoleum in the center of Sofia. This became clear during the presentation of the contemporary art projects in an urban environment, approved under the "Outside" program of the Metropolitan Municipality. This year, two projects will be built under the program. The author of the new installation is Dr. Krasimir Terziev. The project envisages the construction of a circle with the inscription "Between the past that is about to happen and the future that has already been". Unlike previous installations, which were placed in place, the structure this time will be horizontal. According to the project, the letters will be made of steel and will allow them to sit down. The sign will glow at night.

Let's dwell on the past - where the mausoleum was
"Between the past that is about to happen and the future that has already been" reads the message that will mark the site of the former mausoleum in the center of Sofia in the coming months. This is the idea behind the new installation that will replace "One Man" by Venelin Shurelov - the tall observing man who, in October 2020, lived out his life in this space steeped in history. The project was selected by an independent jury after a competition. The budget of the new work amounts to almost 100 thousand BGN.
